Apply for membershipThe Black and Orange Hunt is one of the annual highlights of the Black and Orange Tulip Societies calendar. Each year, members and guests gather for a weekend of tradition, countryside, and camaraderie. The hunt takes place at changing locations across Europe — often in Germany, the Netherlands, or England — offering beautiful and varied landscapes for both riders and spectators to enjoy.
At the centre of the weekend is the drag hunt: a traditional form of trail hunting where a scent trail is laid in advance. Unlike a fox hunt, no animals are harmed. It’s a fast-paced and challenging ride through open fields, woodland paths, and sometimes difficult terrain — a sport that horses, hounds, and riders all thrive on.
Participation in the hunt is only open to experienced riders due to the pace and terrain. There are usually several natural obstacles and fences, but depending on the location, an alternative route may be possible for those who prefer to ride around jumps rather than over them. These alternate tracks, when available, still follow the main course of the hunt.
Tradition plays an important role. All participants are expected to follow hunt etiquette and dress accordingly. Specific dress codes will be shared ahead of each event, and may vary slightly per host country or hunt club.
Spectators are very welcome.
Even if you don’t ride, you’re invited to enjoy the weekend. We organise a full programme for non-riders, including following the hunt by car with planned sherry stops at scenic points. Guests are encouraged to wear tweed and outdoor attire, in keeping with the character of the event.
Whether you join on horseback or as a guest from the sidelines, the Black and Orange Hunt is a weekend to look forward to — full of connection, countryside, and tradition.
